Mui Ne's main beach strip gets most of the sunset attention, and it earns it — but a flat horizon and a row of beach chairs isn't the only way to watch the sun go down here. A 19th-century lighthouse, a cluster of ancient Cham towers, and a fishing village full of basket boats all make for sunset views with a lot more character. Here's where to go instead.
Ke Ga Lighthouse
About 30 km south of central Phan Thiet, Ke Ga Cape is home to Vietnam's oldest and tallest lighthouse, built by the French in 1897 and opened in 1900. Climb to the top for a 360-degree panorama and watch the sun sink slowly into the sea — a shaded path lined with old casuarina and sea-almond trees, scented with white frangipani, makes the walk up as pleasant as the view itself.
Entry to the lighthouse costs around 10,000 VND per person, and a round-trip boat (cano) out to the cape runs about 50,000 VND per person. One important detail: aim to arrive before 5 p.m., because after that only boats run back to the mainland, and once dusk sets in, the roads back have limited lighting and taxis become scarce. Camping overnight on the shore nearby is an option for travelers who want sunset and sunrise in one trip.
Mui Ne Fishing Village
As the fishing boats that went out overnight start trickling back in, the light over Mui Ne's harbor turns a soft gold, silhouetting the hundreds of round basket boats (thuyền thúng) bobbing just offshore. It's one of the more atmospheric, lived-in sunset scenes on this coast — less polished than a beach bar, but far more distinctly Mui Ne.
Chameleon Beach Bar
For a more relaxed, drink-in-hand sunset, this open-air spot on the Nguyen Dinh Chieu coastal road is built around warm rattan chairs facing straight out to sea — about as comfortable as sunset-watching gets in Mui Ne.
Poshanu Cham Towers
Set on a low hill with a sun-baked, golden-brown backdrop, this cluster of centuries-old Cham brick towers takes on a different character as the light turns warm in the late afternoon — more atmospheric and moody than a typical beach sunset, and a favorite among photographers for exactly that reason.
Bau Trang (White Lake)
A short drive north of the main dune area, Bau Trang's combination of a freshwater lake and pale sand dunes gives sunset light somewhere unusual to land — the reflections on the lake surface add a layer the open dunes alone don't have. Arrive while there's still enough light to walk along the lake's edge, since the dune slopes around it are just as striking as the water itself once the sky turns orange.
The Red Sand Dune at Last Light
The Red Sand Dune, right in Mui Ne itself, is easy to underrate as a sunset spot simply because it's better known as a daytime sledding destination. But the same reddish sand that looks warm at noon turns a deep, almost glowing color as the sun drops, and because it's one of the most convenient dune areas to reach from the main hotel strip, it's an easy add-on to an evening that starts elsewhere. Just keep in mind the dunes get genuinely dark fast once the sun is down, with no streetlights to guide you back to the car.
What to Bring and When to Arrive
Sunset in Mui Ne falls at roughly the same time year-round thanks to Vietnam's low latitude, generally between 5:30 and 6:15 p.m. depending on the season. For any of the viewpoints above, arriving 30–45 minutes before sunset gives you time to settle in, scout your spot, and catch the best light rather than rushing in just as the color fades. A light layer is worth packing even in the dry season — the breeze off the sea picks up noticeably once the sun drops, especially at Ke Ga and the fishing village.
Planning Around These Spots
Of these, the fishing village and Chameleon Beach Bar are easy additions to any evening in Mui Ne itself. Poshanu Towers and Bau Trang need a short drive but fit comfortably into a half-day outing. Ke Ga is the furthest and the most rewarding — worth setting aside a dedicated afternoon for, timed so you're climbing the lighthouse well before the 5 p.m. boat cutoff.
